About the team
Our team of seven members from the National University of Agriculture in Benin aims to promote sustainable agriculture through innovation and the circular economy. With GreenValor Compost, we transform cassava peels and poultry manure into organic fertilizer to improve soil fertility, reduce chemical fertilizer use, and minimize waste. We seek to support farmers, create jobs for youth and women, protect the environment, and develop affordable, replicable solutions for sustainable agricultural production.
Our vision
Kétou faces two interconnected challenges: declining soil fertility from overuse of chemical fertilizers and the accumulation of organic agricultural waste, especially cassava peels and poultry manure. Improper disposal of these wastes causes environmental pollution, creates breeding grounds for disease vectors like mosquitoes and flies, and threatens public health (Sulistyowati, et al., 2024). This project aims to recycle cassava peels and poultry manure into high-quality organic compost to improve soil fertility, reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, increase crop productivity, and mitigate environmental and health risks. Then, this initiative transforms agricultural waste into a valuable resource, providing economic opportunities for youth and added value for cassava processors and poultry producers. Beneficiaries include farmers, consumers, local communities, and youth, while potentially disadvantaged groups include chemical fertilizer suppliers. This agroecological approach promotes sustainable farming, environmental protection, and public health through circular organic waste management and improve the knoweldge of women and producers by the training sessions.
Our solution
As solution, our project aims to transform locally abundant organic waste, cassava peels and poultry manure, into high-quality compost. This nature-based solution improves soil fertility in degraded lands, reduces environmental pollution, and limits the spread of disease vectors such as mosquitoes and flies(Belong et al., 2022). The innovation lies in combining these two waste streams into a circular agricultural model that supports biodiversity, reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers, and promotes long-term soil health. Additionally, the project creates income-generating opportunities for farmers, youth, and local processors, fostering both economic and environmental resilience in the community. By integrating waste valorization, sustainable agriculture, and community engagement, this initiative offers a holistic and innovative approach to sustainable food systems.
